What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, colloquially referred to as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that corrects functional breathing concerns, such as a deviated septum, airway obstructions, or internal structural concerns. It is also used to address aesthetic concerns to enhance the appearance of the nose, balance facial proportions and improve harmony among the facial features.
As an expert in facial plastic surgery, Dr. Brys appreciates that even minor modifications to the nose can significantly impact your overall facial profile. She also recognizes that too many alterations can create an “overdone” look that isn’t pleasing or balanced. Dr. Brys is an expert in numerous approaches to cosmetic nose surgery, including primary rhinoplasty, teenage rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty, female rhinoplasty, and male rhinoplasty.
After completing a physical examination, Dr. Brys will determine the appropriate approach for your rhinoplasty.
- Open Rhinoplasty. Small incisions are made in the columella, which is the strip of skin that separates the nostrils. All external incisions are well-concealed and will be nearly invisible when they heal. Open rhinoplasty is Dr. Brys’s typical approach.
- Closed Rhinoplasty. In this rhinoplasty technique, all incisions are made inside the nostrils and are not visible following the procedure. Dr. Brys will perform closed rhinoplasty in special cases if indicated.

Preparing for Your Rhinoplasty
Dr. Brys customizes rhinoplasty procedures to achieve optimal plastic surgery results for each patient, so all procedures will be unique. Here are some common steps to expect.
Schedule Your Consultation
It is important to select an experienced, board-certified, and well-regarded facial plastic surgeon. You may schedule consultations with a few plastic surgeons to ensure you find the most experienced provider for your unique needs. During your consultations, request to see before and after photos and read patient reviews to get an idea of the results your surgeon achieves.
Get Tested
During your consultation, Dr. Brys may advise you to have medical evaluations, blood work, or other tests to assess your overall health. At this time, she will also instruct you on how to proceed with your current medications, including blood-thinning medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements that may cause bleeding.
Quit Smoking/Vaping
Smoking can negatively impact your body’s ability to heal following surgery, including causing complications, delaying recovery, and affecting your results. If you currently smoke, vape, or use nicotine products, you should quit. For at least two weeks before surgery and until recovery is complete, avoid all nicotine products.
Eat Balanced Meals and Stay Hydrated
Avoid significant weight fluctuations by keeping to your consistent exercise regimen and balanced diet. Eat healthy, nutritious meals with plenty of protein as proper nutrition supports optimal recovery.
Prepare for Your Recovery
Take off plenty of time from work. Plan for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours after your procedure. Arrange a clean, comfortable place to recuperate. Purchase the supplies you’ll need and fill your pain medication prescriptions. Consider preparing and freezing meals for easy preparation or arrange for a delivery service.

Rhinoplasty Procedure Overview
On the day of your nose job, you’ll meet with Dr. Brys and your anesthesiologist. Your anesthesiologist will always be a certified MD. Dr. Brys will review the details of your procedure and answer any final questions you may have.
Once you are safely sedated, Dr. Brys will begin your rhinoplasty as discussed during your consultation. Using the images we created for guidance, Dr. Brys will create the appropriate incisions to sculpt the underlying structures of the nose to improve its function or enhance its appearance.
Changes created during rhinoplasty may include:
- Increasing or decreasing the size of the nose
- Altering the shape of the nose
- Narrowing the nostrils
- Refining the nasal tip
- Smoothing bumps on the nasal bridge
After altering the nasal structures, Dr. Brys will re-drape the skin over the restructured nasal framework, close the incisions, and add splints and dressings to the nose. Depending on the extent of your procedural plan, rhinoplasty procedures typically take one to two hours.
Rhinoplasty Recovery and Healing
Following your rhinoplasty procedure, you may experience pressure or discomfort for up to a week to 10 days. You should expect bruising and initial swelling to take two to three weeks to resolve; however, residual swelling may last up to a year.
To minimize swelling and bruising, it’s important to keep your head elevated without bending, lifting, or engaging in strenuous activities during your initial recovery. Typically, Dr. Brys will remove splints or packing within a week. She will also provide thorough instructions for your optimal recovery.
Plan to take at least one to two weeks off from work. Generally, you can resume sedentary work in one to two weeks. If you have a physically demanding job, you may need a longer recovery time or request modified duties.
In two to four weeks following surgery, you should be able to resume most normal activities, including light workouts; however, continue avoiding strenuous exercises for three to four weeks. During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Brys will advise you as to when you may resume all activities.

Parsippany, NJ Rhinoplasty FAQs
What are my options for anesthesia?
General anesthesia or monitored anesthesia care, also known as twilight sedation. You’ll be
awake and able to respond to commands, but will not remember the events afterwards. General
anesthesia is preferred, as it helps control any bleeding, especially if you require any internal
work on the nose
What can I expect immediately after rhinoplasty surgery?
You’ll wake up from your surgery with a cast on your nose, a drip pad in place under your nostrils, and
a cool compress over your eyes. You will feel congested, but you should have limited pain.
Acetaminophen is typically taken to control pain. Your energy levels may be lower than usual, as your
body is working on healing your nose.
How should I prepare for my rhinoplasty consultation?
As you prepare for your rhinoplasty consultation, consider what you would like your nose to look like.
Some people bring pictures of themselves prior to any trauma that may have caused their nose to be
deviated. Others bring pictures of other people’s noses that they like. Having a clear idea of what you
want the end result to be will help. Dr. Brys will use an imaging program to show what your new nose
would look like on you.
How should I prepare for my rhinoplasty surgery day?
Here are instructions for the day before and the day of surgery:
● Do not eat anything after midnight the night before your surgery
● Wear comfortable clothes and a button-down shirt that doesn’t need to be pulled over
your head or around your nose.
● Collect all your prescription medications in advance, such as the antibiotic.
● Collect all postoperative materials such as Arnica Montana, bromelain, cotton-tipped
applicators, vaseline, and hydrogen peroxide.
● Follow any preoperative instructions your doctor may have given you in regards to
stopping or taking your regular medications.
What should I do immediately after my rhinoplasty surgery?
- Rest
- Stay elevated
- Apply cool compresses to your eye and cheek area
- Clean your incisions
- Hydrate and eat light meals
What are the risks of a rhinoplasty procedure?
Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, carries potential risks that should be carefully considered before undergoing the procedure. These risks include:
Common Risks:
- Bleeding: Excessive bleeding during or after surgery can occur.
- Infection: Infection is a rare but possible complication that may require antibiotics or additional surgery.
- Scarring: Visible scars may form along the incision lines.
- Swelling and bruising: Significant swelling and bruising are expected after surgery, which can last for several weeks.
- Numbness: Temporary or permanent numbness in the nose and surrounding areas may occur.
- Changes in sense of smell:Temporary or permanent changes in the sense of smell are possible.
Less Common Risks:
- Nasal septal perforation: A hole in the cartilage wall that separates the nostrils.
- Nasal airway obstruction:Difficulty breathing through the nose.
- Skin necrosis: Death of skin tissue, which may require additional surgery.
- Fracture of the nasal bones:Accidental fractures during surgery can occur.
- Hematoma: A collection of blood under the skin that may need to be drained.
- Allergic reactions: Allergic reactions to anesthesia or other medications used during surgery are rare but possible.
What does liposuction recovery look like?
Smoking increases the risk of infection and poor healing. Nicotine negatively affects the small blood
vessels that supply blood to the nose and aid in its healing. You must stop smoking and/or using any
nicotine-containing products 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your surgery.
What is the recovery time for rhinoplasty?
The most intense healing time following rhinoplasty is the first 2 weeks. However, the postoperative
swelling can take up to a year to fully resolve. Eighty percent of swelling resolves within 3 months. You
may resume regular activities after 2 weeks.
When can I return to work after my rhinoplasty procedure?
Most people return to work 7 to 10 days after their procedure.
When can I work out after my rhinoplasty procedure?
You can return to working out 2 weeks after your rhinoplasty. At that point, your risk of bleeding has
decreased enough for you to resume strenuous activities. Before the 2-week mark, you can take
leisurely walks and stay mobile.
Will my nose still be unique to me after rhinoplasty?
Your nose will be uniquely yours. Although people often seek similar changes, such as to lower their
hump, the end result is specific to each individual.
Is rhinoplasty painful?
Most people did not find rhinoplasty to be a painful procedure. However, there is some discomfort.
Most people complain of a sensation of fullness and pressure. In other words, many people feel like they
have a cold and their nose is blocked. People generally do not require narcotic medications for this and
do well with acetaminophen or ibuprofen postoperatively.
How can rhinoplasty improve the function of my nose?
Rhinoplasty can enhance the support of the nasal sidewalls and straighten the septum. This makes the
nasal airway wider, improving breathing.
How do I know if I need septoplasty?
Common symptoms for patients who require septoplasty are nasal airway obstruction that is often
single-sided. Dr. Brys will examine your nose to see if a septoplasty is necessary and beneficial.
What is an ‘Open’ or ‘Closed’ Rhinoplasty?
Open and closed rhinoplasty refer to the types of incisions made to access the inside of your nose. In
the open rhinoplasty, there is a small, well-hidden incision made in the columella that is then connected
to the incisions on the inside of the nose. During closed rhinoplasty, all the incisions are placed through
the mucosa inside of the nose.
What is the best age to undergo rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty should not be performed before you have completed puberty, as the face still needs to
complete its growth cycle. However, no age post-puberty is too old assuming you are otherwise healthy.
Will I need nasal packing during recovery?
There is no formal nasal packing placed inside the nose. However, Dr. Brys does place very narrow
silastic splints around the septum to prevent scar formation. These get removed 1 week after the
procedure. She also places a small amount of gauze at your nostrils that you remove the morning after
your surgery. The typical videos of large amounts of gauze packing that are removed, which can be
found on YouTube, aren’t true to reality.
Why is revision rhinoplasty more challenging to perform than primary rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty is more difficult to perform than primary rhinoplasty because scar formation does
not make the tissue easy to dissect. It is also unknown what was previously done and how much
cartilage remains for structural support
What are some additional benefits of rhinoplasty?
Builds your confidence, improved self esteem , better confidence in social or professional settings,
occasionally enhances sense of smell , may improve voice resonance
Is computer imaging a reliable indicator of what rhinoplasty can do for me?
Computer imaging can provide a reliable image of what to expect from your rhinoplasty. It is used as a
form of communication to make sure that Dr. Brys and you are on the same page in terms of what you
are trying to achieve. Dr. Brys uses these images in the operating room to guide her to the final operative
result.
When does medical insurance cover rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is typically not covered by medical insurance, especially for cosmetic purposes. Portions of
the rhinoplasty may be covered by insurance, such as nasal valve repair and septoplasty. These may be
covered by insurance because they support better nasal breathing.
Where will my rhinoplasty procedure be performed?
Your rhinoplasty procedure will be performed at the Ridgedale Surgery Center at 14 Ridgedale Ave.,
Cedar Knolls, New Jersey.
