What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, medically known as rhytidectomy, is a facial rejuvenation procedure that addresses common signs of aging. Facelifts focus on the underlying facial structures to restore your natural contours without dramatically altering your unique features. Facelifts remove excess skin, reposition and tighten loose muscles, and address unwanted fat deposits to create a smoother aesthetic and visibly younger-looking skin. This is done through well-concealed incisions around the ears and within the hairline.

Facelifts are often selected by patients in their 40s to 60s, when signs of aging have developed.

Areas most vulnerable to aging include:

  • Facial contours
  • Jowls or fullness along the jawline
  • Loose facial and neck skin
  • Deep lines and wrinkles
  • Nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Volume loss
  • Double chin or submental fullness

What Is a Neck Lift?

Neck lifts improve the signs of aging in the neck, including sagging skin, excess fat, jowls, or platysma muscle banding. A neck lift rejuvenates the jawline and chin, creating a sleeker, slimmer profile by tightening the skin and muscles. Neck lifts are often performed with upper facelifts to ensure a more polished and balanced facial appearance.

A neck lift improves:

  • Lax or sagging skin and muscles
  • Jawline definition
  • Jowls or pre-jowls
  • Double chin
  • Neck wrinkles and muscle bands
  • Fat deposits on the jawline

What Is a Microlift?

A microlift, also known as a ponytail lift, is a limited facelift done through a small incision hidden in the hair.  This is a minimally invasive procedure that addresses the early signs of aging such as sagging cheeks and deep nasolabial folds. It is typically done under local anesthesia and takes about an hour to complete. It is an excellent option for those who are starting to see the early signs of aging and want a longer-term, natural-appearing solution.

Facelift | Neck Lift and Weight Loss

Losing weight offers incredible health benefits, and while significant weight loss can have unintended effects on the skin, the right procedures will effectively protect and rejuvenate your facial features. Particularly, rapid weight loss can cause the skin to sag, making the face look gaunt or older.  Rapid weight loss following weight loss surgery or medications can create what is popularly known as  “Ozempic face.” However, a hollowed-looking face is common with any substantial weight loss, no matter how it is achieved. With a facelift and neck lift, Dr. Brys can address the loose, sagging skin and remaining fat pockets that draw attention away from your weight loss success.

  • Be a non-smoker, or be willing to quit at least two weeks before and after surgery

• Review before/after photos and patient reviews.

Medical Evaluation by Dr. Brys

• Complete blood work or additional tests to assess your overall health.

• Nicotine products, including tobacco, vaping, gum, or patches, decrease your body’s ability to heal following surgery, causing complications, delaying recovery, and negatively affecting your results.

• Eat balanced, nutritious meals with plenty of protein to support optimal recovery.

• Maintain weight through diet and exercise.

Prepare for your Recovery Phase

• Plan to take off 1-2 weeks from work, longer for physically demanding jobs.

• Organize post-surgery transportation and care by a responsible adult for at least 24 hours after your procedure.

• Arrange a clean, comfortable place to recuperate.

• Ensure your medication prescriptions are filled and purchase any necessary supplies. Obtain Vitamin C, Arnica Montana, and Bromelain tablets, as these promote healing.

• Plan meal delivery or consider freezing meals prior to surgery.

Facelift and Neck Lift Procedure Overview

On the day of your facelift and neck lift, you’ll meet with Dr. Brys and your anesthesiologist. Your anesthesiologist will always be a certified MD or DO. Dr. Brys will review the details of your procedure and answer any final questions you may have.

Once you are safely sedated, Dr. Brys will begin your procedure, as discussed during your consultation. Using the images we created for guidance, Dr. Brys will create small, well-concealed incisions, typically near the ears, to remove excess skin and fat and tighten the underlying muscles. Depending on the extent of your procedural plan, facelift and neck lift procedures typically take two to three hours.

Facelift and Neck Lift Recovery

Following your facelift or neck lift procedure, you may experience pressure or discomfort for 7 to 10 days. You should expect swelling, bruising, and numbness that will take two to three weeks to resolve; however, residual swelling may last up to a year.

To aid the post-recovery process, Dr. Brys recommends:

One to two weeks post-surgery:

  • Elevate your head and avoid bending, lifting, or engaging in strenuous activities during your initial recovery.
  • Wear your compression dressings as recommended to help your body adjust to its new contours.
  • Eat a balanced, protein-rich diet.
  • Plan to take at least one to two weeks off from work. Generally, you can resume sedentary work in one to two weeks. Those with physically demanding jobs may need a longer recovery time or request modified duties.
  • Vitamin C, Arnica Montana, and Bromelain tablets are over-the-counter supplements that promote healing.

Two to four weeks post-surgery:

  • Resume normal activities, including light workouts.
  • Continue to avoid strenuous exercises for three to four weeks.
