What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift surgery, is a procedure that involves removing excess skin and fatty tissues around the eyes, tightening the eyelid muscles, and correcting functional issues to restore vision. Eyelid lift surgery addresses concerns on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both to restore a refreshed, more alert-looking appearance.

For upper eyelid surgery, incisions are hidden in the upper eyelid crease. This procedure can improve your vision if the hanging skin is severe. Lower eyelid surgery is performed with an incision just below the eyelashes or on the inner surface of the eyelid to remove or reposition fat. Excess skin is removed through an incision hidden under your eyelashes.

What Issues Can Blepharoplasty Correct?

During your eyelid lift surgery, Dr. Brys can address different aspects of the upper and lower eyelids to rejuvenate your bright, alert eyes and address functional and aesthetic concerns, including:

  • Sagging skin
  • Loss of the natural upper eyelid contour
  • Impaired vision
  • Fat deposits that cause puffy eyelids
  • Prominent under-eye bags
  • Drooping lower eyelids
  • Excess skin or fine wrinkles on the lower eyelids
  • Tired facial appearance

Blepharoplasty and Weight Loss

While weight loss benefits your general health, significant weight loss can have unintended effects on the skin, leaving the eyelids seem droopy, heavy, or tired. This is particularly noticeable after rapid weight loss following weight loss surgeries or medications, creating what has been popularly called the “Ozempic face.” With blepharoplasty, Dr. Brys can help you address drooping eyelids that might draw attention away from your weight loss success.

  • Be a non-smoker, or be willing to quit at least two weeks before and after surgery

Pre-surgery Consultation

• Select an experienced, board-certified, and well-regarded facial plastic surgeon.

• Consider scheduling consultations with multiple plastic surgeons to find the most experienced provider for your unique needs.

• Review before/after photos and patient reviews.

Medical Evaluation by Dr. Brys

• Complete blood work or additional tests to assess your overall health.

• Assess current medications, including blood-thinning medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements that may cause bleeding.

Pre-surgery Preparation

• Avoid all nicotine products for at least two weeks before surgery and until recovery is complete.

• Nicotine products, including tobacco, vaping, gum, or patches, decrease your body’s ability to heal following surgery, causing complications, delaying recovery, and negatively affecting your results.

• Eat balanced, nutritious meals with plenty of protein to support optimal recovery.

• Maintain weight through diet and exercise.

Prepare for your Recovery Phase

• Plan to take 1-2 weeks off from work, longer for physically demanding jobs.

• Organize post-surgery transportation and care by a responsible adult for at least 24 hours after your procedure.

• Arrange a clean, comfortable place to recuperate.

• Ensure your medication prescriptions are filled and purchase any necessary supplies. Obtain Vitamin C, Arnica Montana, and Bromelain tablets.
• Plan meal delivery or consider freezing meals prior to surgery.

Blepharoplasty Procedure Overview

On the day of your eyelid lift surgery, you’ll meet with Dr. Brys and your anesthesiologist. Your anesthesiologist will always be a certified MD. Dr. Brys will review the details of your procedure and answer any final questions you may have.

Once you are safely sedated, Dr. Brys will begin your blepharoplasty, as discussed during your consultation. With well-concealed incisions, Dr. Brys will remove the redundant skin in the upper or lower eyelids, tighten muscles, and remove or reposition fat for a more youthful eyelid appearance. Depending on the extent of your procedural plan, eyelid lift surgery typically takes one to two hours.

Eyelid Lift Recovery and Healing

Following your blepharoplasty, you may experience discomfort for up to two weeks. You should expect bruising and initial swelling to take two to three weeks to resolve; however, residual swelling may last up to a year. During your recovery, you will also have sensitivity to light or frequent dry eyes, tearing, or blurred vision. These side effects typically resolve within a month.

To aid your recovery, Dr. Brys recommends:

One to two weeks post-surgery:

  • Plan to take at least one to two weeks off from work.
  • Keep your head elevated to minimize swelling or bruising.
  • Avoid bending, lifting, or engaging in strenuous activities during your initial recovery.
  • Avoid sun exposure and wear dark sunglasses when sun exposure is unavoidable.
  • Avoid watching TV, reading, or using your laptop, cellphone, or tablet for two to three days.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses until your incisions heal.

Two to four weeks post-surgery:

  • In two to four weeks following surgery, you should be able to resume most normal activities, including light workouts; however, continue avoiding strenuous exercises for three to four weeks.
  • During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Brys will advise you when you may resume all activities.

How Soon Will I See My Results?

Many factors determine the longevity of your eyelid lift surgery recovery, including the extent of your procedures, health, and age.

Following your blepharoplasty, you will have pain, bruising, and swelling in the upper face that may obscure results for a few weeks while it resolves. Residual swelling may take a year to resolve. During your consultation, Dr. Brys will discuss an estimate of your recovery time.

With thorough follow-up care, your blepharoplasty results will permanently enhance the appearance of your eyelids and facial features for up to 10 to 15 years. As your skin continues to age, Dr. Brys will recommend following a healthy skincare regimen or skin rejuvenation treatments and avoiding sun exposure to ensure long-lasting results.

How Much Does an Eyelid Lift Cost?

Blepharoplasty procedures are highly customizable. As such, costs will vary by patient and depend on the extent of each procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Brys will determine the scope and cost of your New Jersey eyelid lift surgery.

Blepharoplasty to address functional concerns may be covered by health insurance, depending on the procedure and your provider. Cosmetic eyelid lift surgery is not covered by insurance; however, we offer financing with approved credit. During your consultation, our staff can assist you in applying for financing.

Can My Blepharoplasty Be Paired with Other Procedures?

Having procedures concurrently often depends on the procedures you’ve chosen, the extent of the surgery, and your health and age.

Combining the right procedures can greatly enhance their comprehensive results, creating a balanced, more symmetrical, and proportional facial appearance.

To ensure a finished-looking facial appearance, blepharoplasty results can be complemented by many procedures, including: Rhinoplasty, Facelift | Neck Lift, and Brow Lift | Forehead Lift.
