What Is a Lip Lift?

Lip lifts, or lip enhancement procedures, are designed to improve the appearance of naturally thin or deflated lips for a plumper look. With surgical and non-surgical options, lip enhancement treatments redefine the shape and restore lost volume and smooth lines and tighten the skin around the lips, creating a refreshed, natural look.

Surgical Lip Lift

Surgical lip lifts offer long-lasting facial plastic surgery results. By increasing lip volume, a surgical lip lift can augment lip height and ensure more teeth appear when smiling. With well-concealed incisions, lip lifts renew facial balance and volume for a redefined lip shape.

Subnasal Lip Lift / Bullhorn Excision

The subnasal lip lift lifts the red lip by reducing the space between the upper lip and the nose. This elevates the vermilion border and allows the soft pink flesh of the lips to be more visible. As a result, the lip is fuller and plumper. By using a subnasal incision, the scar is well hidden under your nose. Dr. Brys removes the extra skin tissue and lifts your lip to a new position to make your lips appear larger. This is called a bullhorn excision. Lip lift procedures can also correct a permanent frown by addressing the corners of the mouth.

Smas Lip Implant

If you are undergoing a face or neck lift procedure, you may also be a candidate for lip augmentation using superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) tissue transfer. This procedure adds long lasting volume to the upper and lower lips. A small strip of SMAS tissue is placed through small incisions in the corners of your lips during your facelift procedure.

Injectable Lip Augmentation

Dermal fillers effectively restore or increase lip volume and reduce the signs of aging around the lips. By promoting collagen production, fillers also help improve the overall lip appearance. With no downtime and minimal discomfort, lip fillers provide immediate results that can last 6 to 18 months.

The Botox® Lip Flip uses injectable neuromodulators for natural-looking lip enhancement. Neuromodulators relax the orbicularis oris muscle and prevent repetitive movements in the upper lips. This treatment allows the lips to curl outward for a plumper lip appearance and a more defined shape for 3 to 6 months. Neuromodulators can also be used to decrease your frown by treating the depressor anguli oris (DAO) muscle that pulls down the corners of the mouth.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for Lip Lift in New Jersey?

The most important factor in considering a lip lift procedure is your overall health. Good physical and mental health are important to reduce the risk of complications and improve your overall well-being.

Dr. Brys suggests lip lift surgery candidates should:

  • Be in good overall health
  • Be a non-smoker, or be willing to quit at least two weeks before and after surgery
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have no conditions that impair healing
  • Have no history of neuromuscular diseases
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Understand the inherent risks involved in all surgeries

Preparing for Your Lip Lift Procedure

Dr. Brys customizes all lip lift procedures to achieve optimal results for each patient.

Pre-surgery Consultation

• Select an experienced, board-certified, and well-regarded facial plastic surgeon.

• Consider scheduling consultations with multiple plastic surgeons to find the most experienced provider for your unique needs.

• Review before/after photos and patient reviews.

Medical Evaluation by Dr. Brys

• Complete blood work or additional tests to assess your overall health.

• Assess current medications, including blood-thinning medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements that may cause bleeding.

Pre-surgery Preparation

• Avoid all nicotine products for at least two weeks before surgery and until recovery is complete.

• Nicotine products, including tobacco, vaping, gum or patches, decrease your body’s ability to heal following surgery, causing complications, delaying recovery, and negatively affecting your results.

• Eat balanced, nutritious meals with plenty of protein to support optimal recovery.

• Maintain weight through diet and exercise.

Prepare for your Recovery Phase

• Plan to take off 1-2 weeks off from work, longer for physically demanding jobs.

• Organize post-surgery transportation and care by a responsible adult for at least 24 hours after your procedure.

• Arrange a clean, comfortable place to recuperate.

• Ensure your medication prescriptions are filled and purchase any necessary supplies. Obtain Vitamin C, Arnica Montana, and Bromelain tablets, as these promote healing.

• Plan meal delivery or consider freezing meals prior to surgery.

Lip Lift Procedure Overview

Lip Lift Surgery

Typically, lip lift surgery is performed with local anesthesia. While you remain awake, you should not feel any pain. Dr. Brys will begin your lip lift surgery by making small incisions beneath the nose to remove a thin section of skin. She will place well-concealed sutures to pull the upper lip closer to the nose. The sutures will be removed approximately a week after your surgery during your follow-up appointment.

Lip lift surgery typically takes 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the extent of your procedure.

Injectable Lip Lift

Injectable lip augmentation treatments, including neuromodulators and dermal fillers, are typically quick and create minimal discomfort. Many injectable fillers contain anesthetics like lidocaine; neuromodulators like Botox® or Dysport® do not. The procedure takes 15 to 45 minutes and is well-tolerated by most patients.

Lip Lift Recovery and Healing

Following your lip lift surgery, it is important to expect discomfort, swelling, bruising, and tightness. These effects may take a month to resolve.

To aid the recovery process after lip lift surgery, Dr. Brys recommends:

One to two weeks post-surgery:

  • Keep your head elevated and ice the area to minimize swelling and bruising.
  • Take at least three to four days off work to minimize motion.
  • Keep the sutures clean and moist by cleaning them with hydrogen peroxide and applying Vaseline 4-6 times a day.
  • Stay out of the sun or use sun protection.
  • Over-the-counter products like Arnica Montana and Bromelain can help with bruising and swelling.
  • Silicone gel or sheets can help minimize scarring.

Two to four weeks post-surgery:

  • Attend your follow-up appointments.
  • Avoid strenuous activities, including exercise, for 2 to 4 weeks. You can resume light activities in one week.

Injectable lip procedures require minimal downtime. You can resume most normal activities immediately afterward. Expect side effects like redness, mild bruising, or swelling at the treatment site. These effects should subside within a few days.

How Soon Will I See Lip Lift Results?

Many factors impact your lip lift recovery, including the extent of your procedure, health, and age. During your consultation, Dr. Brys will discuss an estimate of your recovery time.

After lip augmentation with dermal fillers, you may experience immediate lip enhancement. Some fillers produce gradual results, delivering results within two weeks. Individual results vary based on the product used and your response. Typically, filler results last 6 to 18 months.

Following a Botox® or Dysport® lip flip, it takes 3-7 days for the targeted muscles to relax and enhance the lip appearance. Full results are visible within a week. Typically, neuromodulator results last 3 to 6 months.

For lip lift surgery, patients should expect to experience swelling and bruising for two to six weeks while the incisions heal. Full results are typically visible in six to eight weeks; however, results may continue to improve for a year. With thorough follow-up care and maintenance treatments, your lip lift surgery results will continue to enhance the appearance of your facial features for many years. As your lips continue to age, Dr. Brys recommends following a healthy skincare regimen and skin rejuvenation treatments, as well as avoiding sun exposure to ensure long-lasting results.

How Much Does a Lip Lift Cost?

Lip lift procedures are highly customizable, and costs will vary by patient, the chosen treatment, and the extent of each procedure. As part of your consultation, Dr. Brys will determine the scope and costs of your lip enhancement procedure.

Lip enhancement is a cosmetic procedure. While these procedures are not covered by insurance, we offer financing with approved credit. During your consultation, our staff can assist you in applying for financing.

Can My Lip Lift Be Paired with Other Procedures?

To create optimal facial balance, it is common to have multiple procedures performed at once. It can be cost-effective, saving you from paying multiple procedural costs or anesthesia expenses. It also allows for a single recovery time. You may qualify for concurrent procedures based on your chosen procedures, the extent of the treatments, and overall health and age.

Your lip lift results can be enhanced by other procedures that also improve facial symmetry and proportions, including:

Having procedures concurrently depends on the treatment plan you have chosen, the extent of the surgery, and your overall health and age. As part of the consultation, Dr. Brys will advise you on the best procedures to achieve the aesthetic look you desire.
