What Is a Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant procedure is designed to remove hair from an area of dense, permanent hair to an area of hair loss or thinning. Microfollicular hair restoration is an effective hair transplant technique to improve the appearance of a natural hairline and restore volume to areas of loss.
During a microfollicular hair transplant procedure, Dr. Brys will remove a strip of skin of permanent hair from the back of the head in an area easily concealed by hair growth. Then, Dr. Brys will harvest the hair follicles from the strip of hair and graft them as individual hair units through small incisions in areas where hair growth is desired.
Following a hair transplant procedure, your grafts will heal and shed. New hair will begin growing in approximately three to six months, achieving full results in nine months to a year.

Good candidates for hair transplants are those looking to enhance their overall appearance to increase their confidence and self-esteem.
Generally, Dr. Brys suggests hair transplant candidates should:

- Not be pregnant or breastfeeding

Preparing for Your Hair Transplant Surgery
Dr. Brys customizes all hair transplant procedures to achieve optimal results for each patient, so all procedures will be unique. Here are some common steps to expect.
Schedule Your Consultation
• It is important to select an experienced, board-certified, and well-regarded plastic surgeon with extensive experience in hair transplant procedures.
• You may schedule consultations with a few plastic surgeons to ensure you find the most experienced provider for your unique needs.
Get Tested
• During your consultation, Dr. Brys may advise you to have medical evaluations, bloodwork, or other tests to assess your overall health.
• At this time, she will also instruct you on how to proceed with your current medications, including blood-thinning medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements that may cause bleeding.
Quit Smoking/Vaping
• Smoking can negatively impact your body’s ability to heal following a hair transplant, causing complications, delaying recovery, and significantly affecting your results.
• If you smoke, vape, or use nicotine products, you should quit. For at least two weeks before surgery and until recovery is complete, avoid all nicotine products.
Eat Balanced Meals and Stay Hydrated
• Eat healthy, nutritious meals with plenty of protein and rich in vitamins and minerals as proper nutrition supports optimal recovery.
• Avoid processed or fast foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients
Prepare for Your Recovery
• Take off plenty of time from work.
• Plan for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours after your procedure.
• Arrange a clean, comfortable place to recuperate.
• Purchase the supplies you’ll need and fill your pain medication prescriptions.
Hair Transplant Procedure Overview
On the day of your hair transplant, you’ll meet with Dr. Brys to review the details of your procedure and answer any final questions you may have. Before beginning your treatment, we will provide sedation and pain medications.
Once the scalp is treated with local anesthetic, Dr. Brys will begin your procedure as discussed during your consultation. Dr. Brys will remove a strip of skin from the back of the head and then suture the incision together again.
Hair follicles are carefully harvested from this strip of skin. These hair grafts are then strategically placed with small surgical sites in the areas of the scalp where hair growth is desired.
Depending on the extent of your hair transplant, procedures typically take three to six hours.
Hair Transplant Recovery and Healing
Following your hair transplant procedure, you will be allowed to return home with a small dressing on your head. To protect your hair grafts, you may need to wear a head covering for three to four days. You will have small scabs on the incision sites that will fall off within a week. After the scabs heal, these hair follicles will become dormant, and the new grafts will shed in a few weeks.
You may experience discomfort for 7 to 10 days following hair transplant surgery. Sutures are typically removed in a week. To minimize swelling and bruising, it’s important to keep your head elevated and avoid strenuous activities that may cause sweating or bleeding. Dr. Brys will provide thorough instructions for your optimal recovery and will advise you when you may resume all activities.
After your micro follicular hair restoration, you will notice new hair growth in two to three months. Final results may take nine months up to a year to achieve natural hair growth.
How Soon Will I See My Parsippany, New Jersey Hair Transplant Results?
Following your hair transplant surgery, your follicles will enter a shock phase where the transplanted hair will fall out and the follicles will hibernate for 3 to 4 months. After this phase, you will begin to see new hair growth. You will continue seeing changes to your hair density and hairlines for about a year.
Depending on the desired results, degree of hair loss, and available donor hair, some patients may require 2 separate sessions to achieve their goals.
With thorough follow-up care, your hair transplant results will create a more youthful hairline and overall appearance with permanent results. Dr. Brys will recommend following healthy diet and lifestyle changes as well as appropriate hair loss treatments to ensure long-lasting results.
How Much Does a Hair Transplant in New Jersey Cost?
Hair transplant procedures are highly customizable. As such, costs will vary depending on the extent of each procedure, including the number of grafts, areas of the scalp, and the number of sessions to achieve your goal. Dr. Brys will determine the scope and cost of your New Jersey hair transplant surgery during your consultation.
While hair transplant procedures are more expensive than alternative hair loss treatments, hair transplants offer permanent results and may be viewed as an investment in yourself and your confidence.
Hair transplants are not covered by insurance. However, we offer financing with approved credit. During your consultation, our staff can assist you in applying for financing.
Can My Hair Transplant Be Paired with Other Procedures?
Having multiple procedures performed simultaneously can be cost-effective, saving you from paying multiple procedural costs or anesthesia expenses and allowing for a single recuperation time. During your consultation, Dr. Brys will determine if your procedures may be performed concurrently based on the procedures you’ve chosen, the extent of the surgery, and your overall health and age.
Combined procedures may help many patients achieve results that complement their hair transplant for a balanced, more polished-looking facial appearance.
These procedures may include:
