What Is Revision Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that addresses aesthetic concerns to enhance the appearance of your nose, the balance of your facial structures, and to improve the harmony of your facial features. Additionally, it corrects functional concerns, such as a deviated septum or nasal valve collapse, that cause nasal airway obstruction. When a rhinoplasty does not produce ideal results, people seek out revision rhinoplasty.

Revision rhinoplasty is a complex secondary procedure designed to address concerns following primary rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, and allows Dr. Brys to refine and enhance both the structure and appearance of the nose. It is paramount that you seek out a board-certified facial plastic surgeon with extensive experience in revision procedures, as revision rhinoplasty presents more complexities than are associated with primary nasal surgery.

As an expert in facial plastic surgery, Dr. Brys appreciates that even minor modifications to the nose can significantly impact your overall facial profile and ability to breathe with ease. Some reasons men and women seek revision rhinoplasty in Morris County, NJ include:

  • Dissatisfaction with initial rhinoplasty aesthetic results
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Injury or facial trauma after an initial rhinoplasty

Am I an Ideal Candidate for Revision Rhinoplasty in New Jersey?

Good candidates for New Jersey revision rhinoplasty are those looking to improve or refine the results of a previous rhinoplasty.

Generally, Dr. Brys suggests that revision rhinoplasty candidates should:

  • Be in good overall health
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be at least one year out from your original surgery and live a healthy lifestyle
  • Be a non-smoker, or be willing to quit at least 2 weeks before and after surgery
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Have no conditions that impair healing
  • Understand the surgical risks

Preparing for Your Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery

Dr. Brys customizes each revision rhinoplasty to achieve optimal results for each patient, making all procedures unique. Here are some common steps to expect.

  • Schedule Your Consultation. It is important to select an experienced, board-certified, and well-regarded plastic surgeon with extensive experience in revision rhinoplasty procedures as they are often more complex than primary rhinoplasty procedures. Additionally, it is important to take the time to come prepared to clearly articulate what it is about your current result that you want to change and how your expectations from your previous surgeon were not met.
  • Get Tested.During your consultation, Dr. Brys may advise you to have medical evaluations, bloodwork, or other tests to assess your overall health. At this time, she will also instruct you on how to proceed with your current medications, including blood-thinning medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements that may cause bleeding.
  • Quit Smoking/Vaping.Smoking negatively impacts your body’s ability to heal following any plastic surgery procedure, causing complications, delaying recovery, and significantly affecting your results. If you smoke, vape, or use nicotine products, you should quit. For at least 2 weeks before surgery and until recovery is complete, avoid all nicotine products.
  • Eat Balanced Meals and Stay Hydrated.Eat healthy, nutritious meals with plenty of protein and rich in vitamins and minerals as proper nutrition supports optimal recovery. Avoid processed or fast foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients.
  • Prepare for Your Recovery.Take adequate time off work. Plan for a responsible adult to drive you home after your procedure. Arrange a clean, comfortable place to recuperate. Purchase the supplies you’ll need and fill prescriptions.

Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure Overview

On the day of your revision rhinoplasty surgery in New Jersey, you’ll meet with Dr. Brys and your anesthesiologist to review the details of your treatment plan and answer any final questions you have. Your anesthesiologist will always be a board-certified MD.

Once you are safely sedated, Dr. Brys will begin your revision rhinoplasty as discussed during your consultation. Using the images that were created for guidance, Dr. Brys will sculpt the underlying structures of the nose to improve its function or enhance its appearance. In many cases, cartilage grafting is necessary for revision procedures, especially in patients who are dealing with airway obstructions following primary surgery. If the nasal support structures were removed or damaged during initial surgery, Dr. Brys will need to use cartilage to support the new nasal passages. Generally, she uses cartilage from the patient’s ear, meaning she will make an incision in the ear to harvest the necessary cartilage, or she will use irradiated cadaver costal/rib cartilage. The origin of your cartilage graft will be discussed during your consultation when she ascertains how much will be needed to repair the functional structures of the nasal passages.

Changes created during a revision rhinoplasty may include:

  • Increasing or decreasing the size of the nose
  • Altering the shape of the nose
  • Narrowing the nostrils
  • Refining the nasal tip
  • Smoothing bumps on the nasal bridge

After altering the nasal structures, Dr. Brys will re-drape the skin over the restructured nasal framework, close the incisions, and add splints and dressings to the nose. Depending on the extent of your procedural plan, revision rhinoplasty procedures typically take two to five hours.

Revision Rhinoplasty Recovery and Healing

You can expect your revision rhinoplasty recovery to look like your primary rhinoplasty recovery period. Following your procedure, you may experience pressure or discomfort for up to a week to 10 days. You should expect bruising and initial swelling to take two to three weeks to resolve; however, residual swelling may last up to a year. In some cases, swelling can be more pronounced with revision surgery than it was following initial rhinoplasty.

To minimize swelling and bruising, it’s important to keep your head elevated without bending, lifting, or engaging in strenuous activities during your initial recovery. Typically, Dr. Brys will remove splints or packing within a week. She will also provide thorough instructions for your optimal recovery.

Plan to take at least one to two weeks off from work. Generally, you can resume sedentary work in one to two weeks. If you have a physically demanding job, you may need a longer recovery time or to request modified duties.

In two to four weeks following surgery, you should be able to resume most normal activities, including light workouts; however, you should continue avoiding strenuous exercises for three to four weeks. During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Brys will advise you as to when you may resume all activities.

How Soon Will I See My Morristown, New Jersey Revision Rhinoplasty Results?

Revision rhinoplasty results generally take longer to appear than primary results because there is typically more swelling associated with revision procedures. After the first few weeks, you will be able to start to see the results of your revision nose job. However, because residual swelling can last up to a year, it is important to be patient with your results and trust the process. There are a number of factors that contribute to the length of your recovery time, and Dr. Brys will do her best to help you set realistic expectations for your unique recovery.

With thorough follow-up care, your revision rhinoplasty results will permanently enhance the appearance of your nose and balance your facial features. As your skin continues to age, Dr. Brys will recommend following a healthy skincare regimen or skin rejuvenation treatments and avoiding sun exposure to ensure long-lasting results.
